Police arrest suspect in Logan burglary spree

Ann Herron

Jun 23 - A Logan man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing an estimated $3,300 worth of property from 37 cars, several businesses and an LDS church.

Derek A. Cammack, 20, was taken into custody Tuesday as a suspect in numerous crimes which occurred during the first two weeks of this month.

On June 2, police claim Cammack broke into the LDS 4th Ward building, 294 W. 200 East. Logan Police Lt. Greg Ridler said Cammack slightly damaged the building, broke open some doors and stole a computer monitor and humanitarian supplies that were to be sent to other countries. Those items were valued at $500.

On June 9, Ridler said, Cammack broke into the Emporium and a nearby residence. Cammack is accused of taking coins from the residence, a laptop computer from the Navy recruiter, stamps from a livestock store and a karate robe from Jim Poulsen's Karate Studio. The majority of those items were recovered.

Ridler said investigators believe Cammack also stole items from as many as 37 cars during this time period.

Investigators believe Cammack got into unlocked cars and stole minor items, like change and CDs. Most of those items have been recovered.

The cars that Cammack allegedly stole items from were located in three areas: two blocks around the area of 200 North and 300 East, two blocks around the area of 100 West and 400 North, and two blocks around the area of 1000 North and 200 West.

Police say the total value of items taken was around $3,300.

Cammack has been charged with 36 counts of auto burglary, a class A misdemeanor; 23 counts of theft, both misdemeanor and felony charges; three counts of criminal mischief, a class B misdemeanor; four counts of burglary of a building, a third-degree felony and one count of burglary of a residence, a second-degree felony.
