Notebook owners often pay a heavy price for the freedom and flexibility a notebook grants them. In a nutshell, the problem is grand theft notebook. According to zTrace Technologies, more than 300,000 notebooks were stolen last year. zTrace Gold is a software package you install on your notebook that operates in stealth mode in case your notebook is taken.

A casual perusal of your hard drive won’t turn up any signs of the program. During routine use, when you connect to the Internet with the notebook, a signal is sent to zTrace’s monitoring facility. If someone absconds with your notebook, you notify zTrace. The company waits until the perpetrator connects to the Internet. If the thief is connected to a LAN, an IP address for the notebook is sent to zTrace. If connected to a phone line (or broadband or wireless connection), zTrace will dial the command center where caller ID will capture the phone number. Armed with this phone number (or information about the owner of the network the miscreants are using), zTrace’s Recovery Team coordinates the retrieval of your notebook with local law enforcement. Think of it as the computer equivalent of ______.
